Cats Got Your Tongue is a thriller that weaves together a murder investigation, a wrongful conviction, family loyalty, and a genuinely moving love story. The central tension pivots on Michael Reeves, a man with a complicated past and a target on his back, and his twin brother Mitch, a contractor and single father who gets dragged into something much larger and more dangerous than he bargained for.
What works best here is the voice. Mitch narrates much of the story in a register that feels like he's a part of your family. He's self-deprecating, sharp, and funny even when everything is falling apart. The humor never undercuts the tension; if anything, it makes the darker moments land harder. A ruined dinner, a Dave Chappelle debate with his teenage daughter, a disastrously burnt pork chop; small domestic moments remind you exactly what's at stake when things go sideways.
My favorite though is Emily. She is a standout. A teenager written with actual interiority rather than as a plot device, which is rarer than it should be.
The pacing is relentless in the best stretches, though it occasionally slows where it shouldn't and rushes where you want more. The courtroom resolution delivers real emotional payoff. This is propulsive, character-driven crime fiction with a beating heart underneath all the bodies.
