Fragments of Affection by Danielle Blum is an ambitious thriller romance that navigates the intricate realities of living with Dissociative Identity Disorder.
The story captures your attention immediately with its portrayal of Jess, a protagonist whose multiple personalities are incredibly active and distinct. Initially, the high level of internal activity is exciting and offers a unique perspective on the narrative. The chemistry between Jess and Jackson is a major highlight; the sparks between them are palpable, making their dynamic feel vibrant and real.
However, as the story progresses, the initial momentum fades. The pacing slows significantly, and the sheer number of personalities and names becomes overwhelming, leading to moments of confusion in which the "spark" of the beginning is lost. It is a book that sits in a complicated middle ground—while the representation and central romance are strong, the execution becomes slightly muddled in the latter half. A solid 3-star read for a journey that is as intriguing as it is challenging.
