The Wolf Behind the Veil

A Bennett Jenkins Thriller: Book 2

The Wolf Behind the Veil

Detectives Jenkins and Barrientos are hunting a kingpin who may not even exist.

No photographs. No records. No social media.

A ghost.

Just a name whispered in the city's darkest corners:

The Wolf.

Millions move through offshore accounts in his name—proof that someone is pulling the strings.

An informant surfaces with a tip: a drug shipment, traced directly to the Wolf. Hours later, he's brutally gunned down.

But when Jenkins and Barrientos crack open the container, they don't find drugs.

They find children.

The discovery exposes a trafficking network protected by wealth, influence, and fear, turning Jenkins's hunt for the Wolf into an obsession.

Because some monsters don't hide in the shadows.

They control them.

Are you a fan of Law & Order SVU? Do you like stories about detectives, organized crime, and human trafficking? Then you need to make The Wolf Behind The Veil your next read! This is the much awaited 2nd in The Detective Jenkins Thriller series, and JB Arnold did not disappoint with this plot. Wolf gives us a whole new batch of interesting characters alongside some old favorites from The Hand Of God. I wouldn’t mind reading more about new character Milena; maybe a side story novella. Hint, hint, Mr. Arnold! I struggled a little with keeping track of the different time lines, but it doesn’t detract from the storyline.

If you love dark, gritty crime thrillers, this one's about to jump to the top of your TBR!

The Wolf Behind the Veil by Author J.B. Arnold is a gripping, edge of your seat thriller that's darker than night itself. Packed with relentless suspense, shocking twists, and a story that kept me turning pages late into the night, this is one thriller you won't want to miss.

This is the highly anticipated follow up to Hand of God, Book 1 in the Bennett Jenkins series. If you haven't started the series yet, now is the perfect time I absolutely recommend reading Hand of God first, although this book can be read as a standalone.

The Wolf Behind the Veil completely pulled me in from the very first chapter. The story does an excellent job of building tension while tackling the incredibly sensitive subject of human trafficking with care and purpose.

I found the story to have the perfect ebb and flow, keeping me fully engaged while thoughtfully developing the characters. I became emotionally invested in each of them and genuinely cared about what happened next.

I absolutely loved the return of Detectives Jenkins and Barrientos. This book made me adore them even more! Their partnership, determination, and heart made them a joy to follow throughout the investigation.

The book strikes a wonderful balance of action, layered characters, and emotional depth that kept me eagerly turning the pages until the very end.

.I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and highly recommend it to anyone who loves a gripping, emotionally charged crime thriller.

Some thrillers surprise you with a twist. The Wolf Behind the Veil does something far more difficult: it changes the meaning of everything you thought you understood.

What begins as Detectives Bennett Jenkins and Angela Barrientos’s hunt for a killer opens into a harrowing web of trafficking, corruption, and violence buried beneath years of fear and silence. The investigation is tense and propulsive, but J. B. Arnold never lets the procedural side overwhelm the people at its center. Jenkins and Barrientos have the kind of lived-in partnership that gives the story both heart and breathing room. Their trust, stubbornness, and sharp-edged banter make them feel completely real.

The dual timeline is especially effective. Each glimpse into the past adds another piece to the truth while quietly challenging the assumptions being made in the present. The revelations aren’t twists thrown in merely to shock the reader; they force us to reconsider who we have judged, what survival can look like, and where the line between justice and vengeance begins to disappear.

Dao’s story is the soul of this book. Arnold doesn’t reduce her to what was done to her. She is complicated, damaged, furious, and fiercely human. Her journey is difficult to read at times, but it never feels exploitative. By the final pages, I wasn’t simply hoping the detectives would solve the case, I needed this woman to reclaim the identity and life that had been stolen from her.

Dark, relentless, and emotionally devastating, The Wolf Behind the Veil is a crime thriller that stays with you long after the investigation ends. The conclusion is both haunting and deeply cathartic. An easy five stars.

I really enjoyed the opening chapter! It was a fantastic hook. Adding in Milena’s POV was a smart choice because it immediately pulled me into the story and made me want to keep reading.

One thing that threw me off was the investigation after Luka was captured. As soon as he insisted it wasn’t him, the detectives seemed to second-guess themselves pretty quickly, which made them come across as less confident than I expected. It made me question whether they really knew what they were doing.

The reveal that Milena was the one who shot her husband didn’t land as strongly as I think it could have. I was hoping for more of an emotional punch, but it felt a little underwhelming.

The majority of Part 1 where the they were trying to find Luka was also where the pacing slowed for me. The transition at the end of this part left me confused. If I were reading this without beta reading, that’s probably the point where I would have set the book down because I wasn’t sure where the story was heading.

I really enjoyed Dao’s POV. I thought the backstory added a lot of depth and was one of the strongest parts of the book. However, I suspected pretty early on that Dao and Milena were the same person, so when that reveal came, it didn’t have much impact. Since that felt like the main twist, I worry that readers who figure it out early may feel like the story loses some of its momentum afterward. It might be worth adding another surprise or misdirection along the way to keep the tension high.

Overall, I enjoyed Parts 2 and 3 much more than Part 1. Once the story got there, I felt more invested, the pacing improved, and I found myself much more engaged with where everything was going.
