Alright. Let’s not pretend silence is harmless anymore. This series already ruined that illusion for me, and here we are… doing it again. So thanks for that. Truly. Love developing new fears like it’s a hobby.
First—thank you, Inside Story, for the ARC and for dragging me back into the Deadly Silence universe. Apparently I didn’t suffer enough the first time.
I have a soft spot for short reads. They’re like emotional drive-bys. Quick. Efficient. And somehow still capable of wrecking you if done right. And this one? I devoured it. No self-control, no pacing—just me, hunched over, inhaling the story like I needed it to breathe.
The concept? Solid. Uncomfortable in the way it should be. That creeping realization that silence isn’t empty—it’s loaded. Heavy. Watching. Waiting.
But yeah… here’s the thing. I wanted more. Not in a cute “oh I enjoyed it” way. No. In a give me more damage, more depth, make it hurt properly kind of way. Which says more about my questionable mental state than the book, honestly.
Because it’s not bad. Not even close. It just didn’t dig its claws in as deep as others in the series have. I’ve been emotionally mauled before by these stories—this one? It scratched. I wanted it to bite.
What it does do well is that sharp reminder: people are dangerous. And when you’re cornered, stripped of control, suffocating in a situation you didn’t choose—that’s when something ugly and powerful crawls out of you. Survival isn’t pretty. It’s loud. It’s desperate. It refuses to stay silent… even when everything around you tries to force you into it.
And that’s the real horror, isn’t it?
Not the silence itself.
But what it turns you into.
Realize that escape is not always an option.
Three and a half stars—because I’ve seen this series go darker, deeper, meaner. And yes, apparently that’s what I crave now. Concerning? Absolutely.
Anyway.
Pick it up. Lose your sense of safety for a bit.
And maybe—just maybe—you’ll walk away with your voice still intact.

Sera is a compelling narrator—vulnerable, gritty, and never quite sure if what she’s sensing is real or a ghost from her past. Tayler Vaughn writes with a sharp, creeping tension that slowly tightens the screws until the atmosphere feels thick enough to cut with a knife. The Marks family’s perfect image cracks just enough to let the darkness seep through.
It’s quick, chilling, and packed with unease—like a summer storm building over a Mississippi field. Quiet at first… then suddenly the sky splits open. ⛈️

An excellent short story that delivered everything I love in a quick read. The writing was sharp, engaging, and immediately pulled me into the world.
Despite the brief length, it felt complete and satisfying, with just the right amount of tension and emotion woven through it.

What an incredibly gripping and suspenseful thriller Sanctuary Of Silence is, I was blown away by this amazing intense chiller.
I was totally drawn into this fast-paced short story by Tayler, I was hooked and it held my attention from the beginning and on edge up unto the frantic ending.
Sera Conrad has graduated from drug court with thousands of dollars in fines, which she has to work off in community service at the Marks Estate, a place for animal rescue sanctuary.
Sera is offered a job she can't refuse working off her fines and some shifts paid as a live-in member of staff.
She soon suspects something is not right with this set-up, locked up in her cell-like room at night, the screams she hears, and the notes of warnings.
It seems the animal sanctuary may be a cover-up for something more sinister, a terrifying nightmare.
Can Sera find a way out and help the other girls escape?
I found this novel by Tayler a really enthralling reading experience, the characters were amazing and exciting.
It is a brilliantly written novel that I truly recommend.

This is my first story by Tayler Vaughn, but it certainly won’t be my last. I enjoyed how the author guided us quickly through the story and introduced the characters, but somehow still cultivated unease and distrust for everyone. I felt as helpless as Sera on her first night at the sanctuary, and I loved it.
If you like a fast read with some real depth, make sure you snag this when it is released.

Sera's vulnerability isn't just physical, it's psychological. Her desperate need to believe this is the fresh start she deserves make her an easy character to root for, and all the more painful to watch as the walls close in. The mute maid Maxine communicates through raised-letter notes slipped under doors in the dark, which is a clever and creepy plot device.
The pacing is effective as the story shifts from hopeful to deeply unsettling within its first act, and the locked room, the surveillance cameras, and the muffled screams build dread without relying on gore. The backdrop of human trafficking and exploitation gives the horror a real-world edge.
A dark, atmospheric slice of psychological suspense and it does exactly what it sets out to do!
Not for the faint-hearted, but genuinely gripping.

And Sera… you can’t help but root for her. There’s something so raw and compelling about her character that pulls you in immediately. Even as the story takes darker and more disturbing turns, you find yourself holding onto hope for her, needing to see how it all unfolds.
But just when you think you have it figured out, the ending delivers a sharp, unexpected twist that hits hard and lingers long after the final page. It’s the kind of conclusion that makes you pause and just sit with it.
If you’re looking for a fast-paced, haunting thriller that you can devour in one sitting, Sanctuary of Silence is an absolute must-read.

This short story was riveting! As a speech-language pathologist, I really appreciated the accuracy of some of the diagnoses mentioned. I loved it a lot actually, because of how close it connected to my profession. I loved how the story evolved and I really appreciated the ending as well. No spoilers from me, but this one is absolutely worth the read!
