The Last Party by A.R. Torre took me by surprise in the best way possible. This psychological thriller masterfully intertwines past and present, leading to twists I never saw coming.
The story centers on Perla Wultz, who appears to have the perfect life in a gated Pasadena community with her husband, Grant, and their daughter, Sophie. However, beneath this facade, Perla harbors an obsession with a decades-old crime: twenty-three years ago, Leewood Folcrum confessed to murdering two young girls during his daughter’s birthday party. Now serving a life sentence, Folcrum’s motives remain a mystery.
As a doctoral student delves into the case, interviewing Folcrum for his dissertation, long-buried secrets begin to surface. Wow. The Last Party took me on a wild ride I was not expecting. This book has everything—true crime obsession, hidden secrets, and characters you don’t know whether to trust or fear. It follows Perla, a mom who seems normal on the surface but is completely fixated on a decades-old murder case. The deeper she digs, the more twisted things get, and let’s just say, I was NOT ready for where this story went.

Secrets, obsession, and moral gray areas collide in this gripping psychological thriller by A. R. Torre, and while it definitely kept me turning pages, it didn’t fully deliver the emotional punch I was hoping for.
Perla Wultz appears to have it all—a beautiful life, a loving family, and a home in an affluent Pasadena community. But beneath that polished surface lies a decades-old murder case that still consumes her. As the story shifts between past and present, and a curious doctoral student begins digging into the convicted killer’s story, the tension slowly builds toward a truth that’s far more complicated than it seems.
The strongest part of this book was the concept. The idea of a loving mother harboring such dark secrets was compelling, and the psychological layers kept me intrigued. The New York Times bestselling author A. R. Torre does an excellent job creating unease and reminding readers that appearances can be dangerously deceiving.
However, the pacing felt uneven at times. Some sections were gripping and intense, while others dragged and made it harder to stay fully invested. I also struggled to connect emotionally with the characters, especially Perla, whose motivations sometimes felt distant rather than deeply immersive.
Overall, this was a solid psychological thriller with an intriguing premise and some clever twists. While it didn’t completely wow me, it was still an engaging read that fans of slow-burn suspense and morally complex characters will likely enjoy.
