1984 is undeniably a literary classic, and its influence on modern culture is impossible to ignore. Concepts like Big Brother, Thought Police, and “war is peace” have become part of our everyday language for good reason. Orwell’s vision of a world where truth is manipulated and individuality is crushed is chilling—and still disturbingly relevant today.
That said, while the themes are powerful, the reading experience itself can feel heavy and emotionally distant at times. The bleakness never lets up, and the pacing drags in places, making it harder to stay fully engaged. Winston’s journey is thought-provoking, but not always compelling on a personal level.
Still, 1984 earns its place as an important and prophetic novel. It’s a book that makes you think long after you finish, even if it isn’t an especially enjoyable read along the way. Worth reading for its message—just be prepared for a dark, sobering experience.
