For a debut novel — and my very first splatterpunk — this was absolutely brutal, violent, and unforgettable.
This is what happens when you push someone to the edge.
Sierra Waff introduces us to Morrigan, a protagonist who embodies her namesake — the Irish goddess of death and destruction. And she doesn’t hold back.
“Morrigan, please... I can’t watch this. It’s too much. You’re a monster.”
That line gave me chills.
The writing is solid — horrifying, bloody, and shockingly powerful.
The scenes of torture are intense, and while it’s clearly "fiction", the truth is many women endure these same horrors. And yes, I found myself rooting for Morrigan.
The plot and characters are well developed over the course of the novel. This book was written to shock you — and to make you sick. Topher got it the worst, and honestly, it wasn’t enough. And the Bear… I can’t even bring myself to write what I think. Let her eat.
"Let her live. Let her rot from the inside out."
That said, I did feel the pacing was slow and somewhat repetitive. Though I suspect that was intentional.
Since this was my first experience with splatterpunk, the gore felt overwhelming and in-your-face. Not necessarily bad — just intense.
