During a quick visit to the abandoned mine in town, Rafe suddenly finds his body slowly weakening, as if he hasn’t slept all night. He feels so sick that he struggles to keep up with the walking pace of his friends. Later, his three friends, Millie the fighter, Gavin the leader, and Ethan the bookworm, realize that Rafe has a magical sickness. But they don’t live in an age of magic, so how is that even possible? As the trio begins a mission to help Rafe, they get lost in time, and their goal has to shift.

I love this book. I would say this is one of the series I’d be willing to continue reading. However, I still haven’t found the spark that would earn it a five star rating, even though the premise, plot, and characterization amaze me.

The adventure is very well described, so otherworldly and detailed. Once you start reading, it’s easy to visualize the fantasy places and creatures in your head as the story guides you along.
While I truly enjoy this book and hope to see more in the series, I still wish there were something stronger somewhere in the story to pull me more firmly toward the next book. Luckily, I’m naturally intrigued. But what about readers who need some kind of stronger trigger to pick up the next book?

With all that said, I give it three stars.
