I’ll be honest — Cake by J. Bengtsson wasn’t a book I would have naturally reached for on my own. But after receiving an ARC, I dove in… and ended up completely blown away. This book is everything I didn’t know I needed in a romance.
From the first few pages, Cake establishes itself as more than just a rockstar romance. Yes, there’s the glamorous lifestyle, the press attention, and the musical fame — but what sets this book apart is the emotional depth and the vulnerability of its characters. This is a story about healing, about choosing love despite fear, and about what it means to be truly seen by someone.
We follow Jake McCallister, a world-famous rockstar with a deeply traumatic past, and Casey Caldwell, the charming, friend of the bride he meets at his brother's wedding. Their story kicks off with awkward banter, playful jokes, and wedding shenanigans and a paparazzi escape that had me grinning. But beyond the flirtation is a slow burn that unfolds into something far more raw and real.
As their relationship deepens, Cake tackles the complications of fame, personal trauma, and emotional baggage in a way that’s honest and compelling. Jake’s past isn’t just a subplot — it shapes the story, and the author handles his journey with care. Casey, for her part, brings balance, humor, and strength to a relationship that could have easily tipped into darkness.
This book truly offers the full emotional experience: heartfelt, romantic, spicy, and yes — even healing. The chemistry between Jake and Casey is electric, but it’s their emotional intimacy that will stick with me the most.
For fans of emotionally charged romances with heart, heat, and depth, Cake is a must-read. I’m so glad I had the chance to experience this story, and I’ll absolutely be picking up the next book in the series.
