It wasn't really my cup of tea, simply because the sheer amount of bad stuff that could happen did and by the end, I felt numb to it all, not uplifted or emotional or anything. I still don't understand the motivations behind many of the characters (aside from selfish and hating Denny) and the struggles were almost too patriarchal to take seriously: paranoid wife who dies, hateful in-laws, a rape allegation (we never DO find out why she did it at all) and far too much reference to racing.
All in all, it felt very ham-handed; as though the author was saying :ISN'T THIS BAD, FEEL BAD, FEEL SAD AND FEEL TERRIBLE NOW NOW NOW! every fifty pages and after a while, it was just too exhausting.
The ending was very well done though, I will give the author that.
