I love these valuable short stories! The relatable characters in each stories are not just a claim. Nora, Rochelle, Florence, and more friends of theirs can actually teach confidence, resilience, and self discovery to your teenage girls.
I wish I had this book when I was a teenager, so I would not have gotten lost in my insecurities and unanswered questions about life. But at least now, at my current age, I can read it gently to my teenage self.
This book has 10 chapters, each featuring one short story. I like all of them that it’s hard to pick which one I love. But after constant debates with myself, now I’d say my most favorite stories are from chapter 2 and 5. Of course, my favorite characters are Rochelle and Amara.
Chapter 2 shows a grieving girl named Rochelle. She misses her grandma very badly, so she can never concentrate on her dance, sports, photography, and debate clubs. After her grandma’s death, triving in her busy school life just seems to be impossible.
Honestly, I experienced flashbacks while reading this chapter. Rochelle’s fading focus reminded me so much of myself. Her grief felt like my loss, too.
“I just wish I’d seen Grandma more. I don’t want her to be mad at me,” she said.

Now, chapter 5. The story begins with Amara’s difficulties with processing numbers. It is not just affecting her grades in math. She has once gotten confused at reading times on her schedule and walked into a wrong class. She often miscounts money. Even worse, she hopped off the buss at the 134th Street while she was supposed to stop at the 143rd.
Through Amara’s story, I learn a condition called dyscalculia, a condition I had never heard until I read this book.
“I think you may have a condition called dyscalculia, which makes processing numbers difficult.”
