Follow Me
~Rachel Graham

Follow Me by Rachel Graham is a trip to the house of mirrors at the local carnival, except this one is built inside a psych ward. Every reflection looks like the truth until you reach out to touch it and run smack-dab into the mirror. Graham hands you a flashlight, points you down a hallway lined with voices, needles, and scripture, and says, “Follow me.” And you will. Just don't expect her to show you the direct path out.

Lena has lived in the mental hospital long enough to know the rules: take the meds, smile at the doctors, and don't mention the voices. She's heard them her entire life, and all that's left of her family is her brother, Aidan. Each day mirrors the one before it: drugs, the fog they bring, nurses who couldn't care less, and doctors who treat freedom like a prize dangled just out of reach.

Then a stranger shows up with a religious group and a very tempting idea: Lena isn't sick. She's gifted. The voices aren't symptoms. They're divine.

For a girl who has prayed for a way out, this sounds like the answer she's been searching for. But sometimes something that sounds too good to be true really is. Lena's road to freedom leads her to a family that looks at her with worship in their eyes, and suddenly the question isn't whether she'll ever get out. It's what the heck did she just get herself into?

Graham makes this book Lena. She writes her with the steady hand of someone who knows these hallways. Lena is stubborn, desperate, humorous when she needs to be, and heartbreaking when she doesn't intend to be. She's plagued by the pain of a childhood filled with voices, a life run by locked doors and needles, and the slow erosion of her sense of identity. Then a promise of being “chosen” lands, and does it land!

Aidan is her one anchor to the outside world, and his dedication to his sister gives the story some much-needed warmth. I would have loved more of him and a deeper look at their relationship because that connection had plenty of emotional potential. As for the strange woman and her religious group...well, you'll have to read it to find out more.

Honestly, being dropped so deeply into Lena's psyche makes you start questioning your own grip on reality. The supporting cast is there to serve Lena's story, and for the most part, they do that well. Still, I wanted more from Aidan simply because I wanted to feel that bond as strongly as Lena does.

The setup hits the mark. Imagine a roller coaster slowly dragging you up the first incline, building the scene with trauma, routine, and an ever-present sense that something isn't quite right. Then comes the descent, arms flapping, screams disappearing into the wind. Graham creates a mood that is sad and tense without allowing it to become overwhelmingly heavy, sprinkling in just enough humor to give you a breath between the darker moments.

I spit my tea when I hit the Chapter 39 nod. IYKYK.

And just when you think you've figured out which reflection is real, Graham pulls the rug out from under you again. And again. Reality remains just out of reach, and every time you think you've got your footing, the floor shifts.

Then comes the twist.

Can I just say...my jaw is still collecting dog hair as it sits on the floor refusing to be picked up.

Follow Me by Rachel Graham is a bold, thought-provoking psychological thriller that explores faith, mental illness, manipulation, and the thin line between miracle and madness. Released June 4, 2024, and available on Amazon, Audible, and Kindle.

As always, all opinions and reviews are of my own volition, Karen Brooks aka The Tx Lit Chic. I have not been promised any compensation, current or future, by the author or publisher for a fair and honest review of Follow Me.

Ok Ms. Graham, maybe this wasn’t the best read for me when I’m having a rough week mentally 🤣 ok kidding. Or am I? Because this book definitely got inside my head.

This was the type of book that you could never trust what you were reading. The combination of mental illness, manipulation and religion that this psychological thriller portrayed was the perfect cocktail that kept me glued to the pages. So many moments I thought I had things figured out, just to realize I was only questioning things some more.

Creepy, unsettling and psychologically twisted. With an ending that leaves you asking “wth just happened?”

This was a triller about a teenage girl who's magical powers were overlooked and written off as mental issues . Lena was locked away in a mental hospital because she heard voices . All that changes once she meets Rose and Leroy .

I was really intrigued by the premise of this book. I didn't know if Lena had powers or if this was just a crazy cult. I thought I had it all figured out until the end and now I'm confused again (which is why I deducted from my rating. I like a clear cut ending.) Overall this book really held my attention and I'd definitely recommend it!

I had forgotten just how amazing this book is! I’ll reshare my previous review:

Lena has long lived with the voices in her head. Wherever she goes. Whatever she does. They follow. Then one quiet afternoon, a woman named Rose visits and turns Lena’s world upside down. There is more to the voices than anyone could ever imagine and Lena must decide what her future brings and what path to follow.

Rachel Graham gives us everything we need in this book to get to know Lena and to connect with her. Every interaction is another window into Lena’s mind and a chance for us to try to see if Lena really is who Rose says she is. The story pulls you through up to the end when Rachel whips the rug from under you and you question everything. I’m still thinking about it!

I found this to be a nicely paced book that made me look forward to finding out Lena’s story. I listened to the audiobook and I always love it when authors read their own book. They know right where to add inflections and the real motivations behind the characters to bring them to life.

Highly recommended read!

This book had me hooked from the very beginning! The storyline has you following Lena a teenage girl who's whole life has been stuck in a mental hospital and told shes crazy. But not everything is what it seems and trust me the plot twist hits hard and has you questioning everything you read and trying to decipher what was reality and what was all made up! I loved the narration told from Lena's perspective and her personality throughout the book ! I definitely didn't see the ending coming or how it was going to have me questioning the whole book!

Being inside Lena's head was equal parts heartbreaking and unsettling. The psych ward setting, the voices, the religious group, the constant uncertainty. It all came together to create a story that kept me guessing from beginning to end.

Not every twist landed perfectly for me, but I was completely invested and couldn't stop turning the pages

Follow Me by Rachel Graham is a emotional journey into the mind of a young woman navigating psychosis, identity crisis, and her past family history. Lena’s story is haunting and beautifully told, blurring the line between delusion and divine purpose in a way that keeps you questioning until the final page. Rachel’s experience as a mental health nurse shines through, lending authenticity and compassion to the story line. An excellent debut and an author to keep an eye out for.

"Follow Me" is a debut novel and one heck of a mind-bending psychological thriller that really dives deep into the blurry line between what is real and what are hallucinations. This book totally blew my mind with its unique storyline, digging into Lena's battle with hearing voices and dealing with delusions. If this wasn’t enough, a mysterious woman from a religious group swoops into Lena's life and flips her whole perspective on its head. Rachel Graham nails it by weaving together faith, identity, and what's real in this spine-chilling yet totally captivating story that'll keep you on edge till the very end. Graham's writing is so vivid and chilling, pulling readers right into Lena's world. In the end, "Follow Me" isn't just your average thriller—it's a wild psychological ride that'll stick with you long after you put the book down. Whether you're into mind-bending tales or just up for a thrilling read, this book is a total winner.

Gripping, original, and suspense-filled.

Absolutely gripping, original, and suspense-filled from start to finish. This is expert-level storytelling. Lena is a young lady living in a mental health facility. Voices taunt her from within.

Everyone seems to know what's best for her, but she longs for some semblance of normality. Surely she can have that if she can just leave this facility? Get away from these doctors and nurses. Do they know best? Should Lena tell them what they want to hear? Will they even listen?

A religious group makes contact, claiming that her apparent psychosis is a divine gift. They want to help her. Can Lena trust them? Can she trust her own mind to cut through the voices to guide her to the right decisions?

This is a storyline like no other that keeps you guessing until the very end. You think you know which way it's going, but do you? A definite, unquestionable 5⭐'s. I loved it!

I'm pretty sure I don't even know my own reality now! What a ride it was reading this book. Lena is a hoot of a character. I love the internal banter she has. At times I found myself questioning my own sanity knowing I share the same commentary. I'm certain I'm not crazy but then again after reading this I am questioning it. Follow Me is a great read, the plot line is certainly unique, the character is relatable, and the writing style is fun. Highly recommend!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is one of those days where I wish I were a writer only so I could give this book the review it deserves. Buckle up for this book, because it’s a wild ride. This is a story of Lena who struggles with mental illness and is placed in a psychiatric institution. Plagued with the voices in her head, Lena is just looking for some peace and the longing to be with people who love her. Out of the blue one day, Lena gets some visitors. They are a religious organization and believe her gift is special. I won’t go into any more detail because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. This is a fast paced thriller, and the ending will leave your jaw on the floor.

Also love the nod to John Marrs in the book. The content warning about British spelling in the beginning is hilarious. I listen to the audio version of this book and read along with the Kindle version. I really love the narrator. I must’ve missed in the beginning, but was shocked in the end when I found out it was also the author can’t recommend this book enough!

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this one. I definitely like it at least 3.5 stars, though depending on how you want to take the ending I could even give it 5. I have a love/hate with an open type ending. I want to love them, (and I DO love the idea of them) however I'm a completionist and it leaves me not quite knowing the author's intent which is a touch annoying.

Anyway.

Lets say I think it ends with a this was all in her head scenario fine. That fits with the first half pretty well, though leaves it all a bit slow feeling and cancels out the stakes almost entirely. Of course we feel bad for Lena and the hand life has dealt her. That would be my 3.5 rating.

However, if we go for a heck yeah she is God ending then Bam! I'm here for it. 5 stars (even if the opening was still slow) it was a slow burn up to cult-crazy and the ending is then poignant and soul crushing.

But, we don't know and I think there maybe could have been slightly more to the ending (even if the author didn't want to give more hints, which I understand) Lena could have thought of ways she could try to tell what really happened. Just something to give the ending a little more closure.

If you are still wondering if the top at the end of Inception is spinning (and it has only driven you crazy in a good way) this book might be for you.
