With the recent murder, she has one last chance to redeem herself in her boss's eyes by teaming up with Agent Perez to crack the case. However, returning home brings her nightmares to the forefront, as her past threatens to overwhelm her, while Agent Perez is determined to pull her back from the brink. Agents Strong and Perez are faced with a killer who is playing a game under time constraints that if they can’t solve will result in more death.

Bailey excels at crafting relatable characters, skillfully developing both Agent Strong and the elusive murderer. Both characters share deep-rooted childhood traumas, creating an unexpected connection that gives readers a chance to empathize with both the investigator and the perpetrator. The supporting characters are also equally developed, providing enough depth to enrich the narrative without overshadowing the main storyline.

Now, can we discuss the dual POV’s with this being her debut novel??? Bailey executes them flawlessly. I was completely oblivious this was her first novel; the detailed and thoughtful execution was impressive throughout. Bailey is a master of atmosphere, using vivid descriptions that immerse readers into each scene while ensuring smooth transitions between POV’S and scenes.

The Pawn proves to be a compelling exploration of psychological trauma and its long-lasting impact on mental health, challenging the mistaken belief that those struggling with mental issues are easily recognizable. When realistically, murderers blend in among ordinary citizens, hidden in plain sight.

Bailey has presented us with a true psychological thriller that keeps us guessing. Each new clue seems to lead you closer to identifying the murderer, only to be flipped on its head with surprising twists. It isn't until the final twist that all becomes clear, highlighting the disturbing truth that even the most unsuspecting neighbor could be harboring dark secrets.

This masterfully crafted narrative builds suspense, allowing readers to join the thrilling chase to uncover a killer while following Agent Strong’s personal journey of growth. Bailey’s talent shines through in The Pawn, making it evident that she is a gifted storyteller. I highly recommend picking up this book and immersing yourself in its gripping tale!

Welz Bailey will have you on the edge of your seat in this cat and mouse game with a poor lost soul and an alcoholic FBI agent whose childhood was also not the best. This was my first novel by this author and I will be continuing the agent Clara series!!!!

Unexpected twists and turns take you off-guard and keep you guessing who the killer is, creating a captivating and suspenseful story. A must-read for thriller enthusiasts! A cleverly crafted masterpiece. A serial killer that chooses his prey by the roll of a die, leaving a handcrafted and painted game counter at the complicated crime scenes like a calling card. 

Lots of red herrings and twists and turns a plenty as the perp plays his game with the investigating team. Turning them this and that way as he leaves pieces of evidence from persons of interest at each scene. Just as they think they've solved it, he strikes again! 

Welz Bailey is a new author to me, but I could tell within the first few lines that they'd soon become a firm favourite. 

Each scene is beautifully described, from the colour of the leaves on the trees to the temperature of the evening air. I've thoroughly enjoyed every skilfully crafted sentence and was gripped from the first word to the very last.

A very clever and unique premise for a story which was what initially got my attention, after the spectacular cover caught my eye. Loved the chess details and Agent Clara Strong was a fantastic character who I hope to see again!

What a phenomenal book! It starts off with such engagement and suspense and it just keeps flowing all the way through. Clara is a strong character with inner demons to fight but powers through it all. Many times I thought I was clever and had the ki!!er figured out but was wrong. The twists and turns are plentiful. Such careful planning and detailing was given to this plot. I can't wait to read more, I need more! Clara, Frank, and Perez are characters I will forever think about.
