Just Below
John Michael Alaia★★★★★
Excellent body horror, confined with the psychological horror of liminal space.
A stunning exploration into repression. The prose are immaculate, allowing just enough to peek through to keep the reader glued to the narrative without giving it all away. There are only hints as to why, but the need to escape is pervasive. Whether taken metaphorically or metaphysically, the emotions conjured are brutal and inescapable.

Withered
John Michael Alaia★★★★★
WITHERED, a novelette, explores the crushing emptiness of clinical depression, how infectious it can be in some circumstances, and the path some choose to relieve themselves of it when there seems to be no other way out. I found this story reminiscent of something by D.H. Lawrence. The prose are engrossing, pulling the reader into the despair of a mother, a wife, left behind, interwoven within an inescapable cycle of nature, while people grasp for the control, the solace, they can only find at the end.
